External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar embarked on a one-day visit to Kolkata, where he engaged in various programs and discussions. Addressing the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Jaishankar reiterated the government's stance, asserting, "that Jawaharlal Nehru's guarantee failed during the Congress era, hence the Modi government decided to bring CAA." He highlighted Nehru's purported assurance of minority security in neighboring nations, suggesting that minorities continued to face persecution despite the pledge.

Jaishankar emphasized the resolve of the current government, contrasting it with previous administrations, stating, "the government from 2004 to 2014 was different and now the Modi government from 2014 to 2024 is strongly resolved. And we are implementing CAA strongly."
